The 5 Minute Make Over

Let’s face it. Looking pleasant in the morning, gives us a positive vibe and it does make an impression. Same goes when we look tired , everything seems to be dragging and it usually triggers our temper.

Who doesn’t want to look fresh as you attend to your daily routine? Whenever we talk to our workshop attendees we always ask them what they think about makeup, there’s usually one story to hear: Putting on makeup takes so much of their time, and that it isn’t necessary unless you’re going to a party.

Putting on makeup doesn’t necessarily mean you have to run around looking like a clown. You don't need to spend hours on your makeup -- unless you're going to a wedding or other special event. A few quick tricks in the morning can hide your imperfections and accentuate your assets, now who doesn’t want that? It doesn't hurt to give yourselves the much needed 5 minute attention. After all, you deserve it.

Here’s a step by step 5 minute makeover, which I use myself. If you were able to attend one of our workshop, (specifically from our 5th workshop- onwards.) I always do a demo on this to show our participants how makeup can instantly improve our looks without looking like you just stepped out of the salon. This can be very useful specially to working moms who are always on a rush ending up looking worn-out before even starting your day. My demo never fails to change our attendees’ impression on makeup application. Try to go through these steps and witness how makeup can give you the “I –just-had-an-8-hrs-of-sleep” look!

Of course I don’t have to tell you every time to never ever take your skin care routine for granted specially the minute you reach the age of 20. You will start seeing the benefit of these routine as you age.

1. Cleanse – Every morning before you do anything else to your skin, wash your face. Same goes before you sleep at night. Never sleep with your makeup on, always wash your face using your chosen facial cleanser before going to sleep and after waking up.

2. Tinted Moisturizer – While your skin is still damp from washing, quickly apply just enough amount of tinted moisturizer, using a sponge or your finger tips. This will serve as your foundation. Just spread it evenly on your skin, same way you apply your regular moisturizer, this should just take a few seconds to get an even application. Why tinted moisturizer? Let me tell you why I chose this over the usual liquid or compact foundation that makeup artists normally use on special occasions.

· Time saver: Tinted moisturizers can give you a fresh, natural look without the need to apply foundation makeup. You might find that tinted moisturizer is the only beauty product you need on many occasions. It can save you time by combining a simple makeup solution with a beauty product you already use. If you are a busy woman, this can help you look your best without taking up a large chunk of your morning time.

· Sun protection: Many tinted moisturizers combine SPF protection along with a hint of color. This combination protects your skin from the harmful effects of the sun while providing even color coverage and the skin-nourishing moisture of ordinary moisturizers. Using a tinted moisturizer with SPF every day is a healthy habit that will help you keep your face fresh.

· Younger looking skin: Some heavy makeup can make wrinkles appear more pronounced instead of deftly hiding them. Tinted moisturizers can help hide wrinkles and fine lines because they have lighter formulations than most foundation makeup. The coverage provided by tinted moisturizers also serves to minimize skin imperfections and wrinkles to provide a healthy, more youthful look.

· Moisture protection: If you are skipping moisturizer, then you might not be caring for your skin properly. Quality tinted moisturizers can work to hydrate the skin and help to prevent moisture loss while evening out your skin tone. The added moisture helps to keep the skin elastic and soothes the inflammation of dry, irritated skin.

Some quality tinted moisturizer brands that I recommend:

Laura Mercier (named as the best tinted moisturizer , quite pricey but its really good and its worth every penny. Available in 2 variants: oil free and skin hydrating, I'm using the oil-free variant, because my entire face tend to get really oily, not just the t-zone area. ), Myra Vita Glow Tinted Mositurizer (if you’re on a tight budget this works fine as well, I also use this whenever I run out of my usual brand) , Nivea (not sure though if this is still available in the market today, but I used to have this and its really good) and Benefit’s You Rebel Tinted Moisturizer.


3. Concealer – Conceal only when necessary. I prefer liquid concealer for everyday use so it won’t give you that heavy feeling to the skin, its also your best bet to combine with your tinted moisturizer. Just put a small dot on your fingertips and apply by gently patting it on the desired area until it blends to your skin – normally you apply this on the under eye area or any other skin imperfection that wasn’t able to cover by your tinted moisturizer. Do not overdo it since our aim here is to look as natural as possible. To hide those dark under eye circles , choose a concealer that is one shade lighter. Concealer shades can be complicated for those who aren’t familiar with makeup, (Concealer has different shades: green, orange, violet, beige, pink, white etc..) because it varies depending on what you are trying to hide we usually use these for bridal makeup which often requires a perfect , flawless finish. However, if its just for your daily makeup routine, you may use a concealer according to your skin tone.

If you think your tinted moisturizer already did a good job in evening out your skin tone, feel free to skip the concealing part. I personally do not use concealer for my everyday makeup.

However, should you decide to use a concealer, don’t forget to top it off with a smoothing layer of powder foundation. Just a little amount to set your concealer.

4. Apply Loose Powder – After applying your tinted moisturizer and concealer, get your big brush, dip it in your loose powder, tap it to remove excess powder then lightly dust it all over your face, using feathery strokes. Be careful not to deposit too much powder just a little amount of talc should do the trick. If you want to achieve a natural flawless finish, use a brush. The powder should not only make your skin look smoother, this should also eliminate the sticky feeling caused by the moisturizer and for your makeup to last longer.

5. Blush – Choose a subtle shade of blush that complements your skin tone, you can ask help from your reliable makeup consultants. (for first timers living here in Manila, I suggest you go to Rustans' makeup counters they usually have professional makeup artists situated in each area, they can help you choose the right shades for you) Always try it on to yourself first before buying anything. Avoid blush that has shimmer in it if you want your makeup to look as natural as possible.

How to apply: First, start with a good quality blush brush. You can accentuate your face and cheeks naturally. Smile and you will see the fleshy part that stands out the most - this is the apple of your checks. This is your starting point for applying your blush. Apply a light layer of blush to the apples of your cheeks and blend up and back TOWARDS THE DIRECTION of your hair line (NOT UNTIL YOUR HAIRLINE), do not forget to blend, we don't want you looking like someone just slapped or punched you on the face. A 2-second swipe for each cheek should be enough, don’t overdo it!.

6. Mascara – Fear not!! this look doesn’t require you to put on any eyeshadow or eyeliner…all you have to do is put on a mascara to emphasize your eyes. Believe me it does wonders! use waterproof mascara to avoid smudging. If you do not have eye makeup remover, you can take it off with the help of a baby oil.

7. Lip Moisturizer / Lip Gloss / Lip stick – Make sure that your lips are well moisturized. One sure way of looking unhealthy is having a pale, dry , cracked lips. Again, if you want it to look as natural as possible, you may use a lightly tinted lip gloss instead of the usual lip stick. If you plan to go out at night, that’s the perfect time to use your favorite lip shade.

...and voila! Now who can tell that you just had a few hours of sleep? Try this and you'll stop hearing these words: YOU LOOK TIRED HONEY!

My New Cute Babies

Isn't these adorable! Scored these from SASA during my HK vacay got the big brush for HK95.00 that would be around Php522.50...the small foundation brush got it for HK85.00 or Php467.00..ITS SUCH a good buy mind you it can compete with my MAC set..PLUS how can you resist that colorrrrrr my fave Lilac- pink! THis is the cutest brush I've ever seen..the big brush blush is made from a real goat's hair...the foundation brush is the same texture as MAC's 190 believe it or not, though this one is a bit smaller in terms of the width of the brush itself compared to 190.These also has long handles which I prefer to use at work. I tried using these myself and its really soft as MAC's. I had to make a comparison before I use these to my clients, because I know there are brushes out there that when you touch it seems so soft, but when you use it to your face it can be really harsh to your skin...Obviously I'm a MAC fan that's why I prefer to use MAC brushes, and I had really nice stories to tell about their brush -- I was doing a makeup gig for the launching of Dingdong Dantes' as the new Belo endorser, I was asked to do the makeups of all belo employees who will serve as usherettes for the event..they all had one thing to say, that my brushes are so soft, my hand seem so light when applying makeup it made them want to take a nap :)) One actually did! :)) She was telling me "ate ang lambot ng brushes mo parang sarap pang paantok when you brush it on my face " then suddenly I had to support her chin because she was actually falling off to sleep!

Hongkong's Faces and Lane Crawford are haven to us makeup lovers :( How I wish we have those in Manila...ofcourse I had to consider the fact that all high end cosmetic brands in HK are sold 30-40% cheaper compared here! and if you're lucky enough to encounter a promo you can buy stuffs 50% off from what we are getting here! Shu are almost half the price!, Got a makeup fix from MAkeup forever for only HKD124.00!!! Shu's Deep Sea Mist got it for only HKD150!! not to mention that they have low end brands that are of good quality --believe me, had to try it for myself the numerous collection of eyeshadow palettes in Sasa are so cheap but does its job well! Scored a cream blush for HKD 12, A cream eyeshadow for HKD12.. Will post my recent hauls from HK soon! The other thing that I noticed in HK, almost all of the women are so eager to have their makeups done ..I haven't seen a vacant makeup counter..all of the counters are filled with makeover sessions...ang SAYA!!! unlike here, when ladies are often shy to have a makeover done in public hahahaha! Oh, by the way the MAC's Cult of CHerry in HK is SOLD OUT..hay :( wanted to get their nail lacquer...but even that was sold out already :( the ladies there always hit the counters --FAST--once a new collection comes out!Anyways, got NARS' fall collection naman..so I'm satisfied with that...and I got my NARS VIP card weeeeee! hahah one time big time you could just imagine how I lost my sanity seeing all the makeup brands that I love in one place...now my pocket is under rehabilitation ..:)Will tell you more about my shop-crazy adventure soon.

What I'm Loving Right Now..

Few weeks from now..I'll be turning 30..awwww! and I decided to give myself a special treat! After I celebrate my birthday with my family..I'm giving myself a break!! I am flying to HK for some needed R&R yey!!! I'll be going with my business partner con bestfriend Anette..we'll be meeting our super best gay friend Iona..(its her bday as well ) so....this only means one thing..and forgive me but I only get to do this once a year...ok this time make it 3 times since ill be staying there for 3 nights hahaha..its what I call the Ultimate GIRLS' NIGHTOUT!!!

Now if I could only limit myself into bringing 2 pairs of shoes I'll be fine...and ofcourse my make up ....that would be a MAJOR decision..please I'm calling all the angels on earth to help me decide to bring just one tiny winy make up kit :( Don't let me bring the whole traincase as much as I want to :D:D:D ..you see I love doing my friends' makeup whenever I get the chance...and this will be a good time for them to take advanage since im doing it for free hehehe..but then Annette will surely go balistic if she sees me pulling along my traincase :))

Ok lets go back to the topic of this post :))..I found a good reason not to bring my bulky heavy traincase... Its inexpensive and Fab at the same time ..who could resist such combo!?!?!?

Presenting my latest buy..my new love :)) my savior :)) Since its too cute I will have to choose this over my traincase....Its a small vanity travelling bag ...Got this from Kamiseta for only Php1,199.00!!! Not bad huh? I love anything cute and this one is definitely in my top list!

now obviously...I just need to bring those that I REALY NEED. Hmmm now why am I hearing myself humming to the tune of...first i was afraid ...I was petrified...hahahha!
Ok, let me justify my behavior--you see my first malet (filled with MAKEUP ofcourse!!!) was stolen when our house was burglarized early this year..I think I'm just undergoing some kind of trauma hahahah!

What's in My Vanity Kit?

This is a list of highly recommended beauty products that I want to share with you. Don't get me wrong, what might work for me doesn't mean that It would actually work for you, but these are sure worth a try!

With my line of work, I had to experiment with different kinds of makeup so I would know what will work for different skin types. Through this, I was able to find the perfect beauty products that suit me best! All products that you see here are tried and tested by me. these are basically what you will see when you rummage through my personal vanity kit. These are what I actually use almost everyday. Mine is actually just the basics, since I really opt for fresh and natural look. Ofcourse before I put these on my face, my skincare regimen always comesfirst..Will share this with you as well in the future.)

PRIMER: Oftentimes, my skin gets too oily..but then I prefer it oily rather than having dry skin as long as I don’t have breakouts I will be fine , I got no choice but to always bringwith me my ever dependable – JOHNSONS OIL CONTROL FILM…but then If you reallywant to have oil-free skin for a longer pd of time without having to freshen upeverytime., What I use is the ALL MATT Matifying Base formula from Makeup Forever. This product always works for me.

I get my supply of this from Beauty Bar. BRUSHES: Okay, I may own quite a number of brushes that I use at work ..you see, I’m quite addicted to buying brushes but I don’t use them for myself hahahah I just love looking at them hahaha! ...But for me, I can live with 4 brushes. I love spending time making other’s people faces, but for myself, id rather go for the quickest , easiest way to look…presentable enough, that's also one of the main reasons why I invest on skincare because, when you have good skin, you don't have to pile on too much makeup just to look nice, thus you spend less time infront of the mirror isn't it? And when it comes to brushes these 4 tools are enough for me.

MAC SMALL ANGLED BRUSH # 263- I can go without the other brushes..but definitely not this one I’m quite OC when it comes to eyebrows hahaha.
For lining, shading or shaping the eye or eyebrow. Flat shaped with angled tip. Firmly distributes colour over the lid and into the corners. Synthetic fibre. Works with all formulas of eye colour.
MAC LARGE POWDER BRUSH # 150 Full and dense for dusting loose or pressed powder on face or body. This brush is particularly good for blush application with soft fibers that form a full, rounded shape. M·A·C professional brushes are hand-sculpted and assembled using the finest quality materials. They featurebirch, linden and ramin wood handles, nickel-plated brass ferrules.
MAC POWDER BLUSH BRUSH # 129
All-purpose for blush or face powder. This brush is particularly good for blush application. Thefibers are soft and form a full, rounded shape.

SUESH HILITER BRUSH This is my eyes’ best friend. It is usually used in the inner corners of the eyes for highlights, But I use this as an eye shadow brush whenever I apply only one color (which is btw, most of the time..im so lazy putting on my own makeup hahahha ) just a few stroke of this and I’m good to go…as in perfect application in an instant that’s why Im sooo loving this brush from Suesh.

I've always been a fan of bronzers, my personal favorite is this limited edition from Lancome - Star Bronzer Bamboo Powder. Too bad, when our house was burglarized early this year, one of the things that the burglars brought with them is my first traincase..and yes, my Lancome bamboo powder was there inside :( when I went to Rustans to get myself a new one..its no longer available.

Number 2 on my list , would be NARS' Laguna...NARS laguna has the perfect amount of shimmer , its suitable both for night time and day time use. This fantabulous product from NARS is always on the top list when it comes to bronzers.

Then I discovered Benefit's Hoola, what I like most about Hoola is that-- it has this soft matte texture,which gives your skin the most natural healthy looking tan. This suits best for daytime use since its matte and doesn't have the usual "bronzy-shimmer-glow"--which is by the way, best when used during a night out. And since its 100% shimmer-free, it can also be used for contouring. I also use this as eyeshadow :)

These bronzers are quite pricey though..specially Lancome. Good thing , there are alternatives. YES :) there is! and I discovered it accidentally .. I was doing my usual online shopping in multiply.. (MY SECRET INDULGENCE!..which is no longer a secret btw..) and I ordered some REVLON eyeshadow cream palette ..(can't help it , its 50% cheaper than the Revlon products being sold in the dept. store..who am I to decline such offer? hahah) anyway, the seller was too nice to give me a FREEBIE --> COVER GIRL press powder in TAWNY..I remember she was even apologetic because the shade is too dark for me..but then I think that's the reason why shes giving it for free and who am I to complain for a freebie right? hahaha. Apparently the texture and shade is almost exactly the same as BENEFIT's HOOLA! It was never a waste afterall and I intend to buy one again once I consume this...Covergirl is a good brand and its way way cheaper than BENEFIT. Hmm...I remember seeing a Covergirl counter in Robinsons Metro East..

So always have a skincare regimen and never take it forgranted (CLEANSE, EXOLIATE, TONE & MOISTURIZE) Now let me share with you my secret to natural glowing look:)

• Some Kind-a Gorgeous - The foundation faker by BENEFIT - One word--- > MAGIC! This works wonders! want to have that satin soft finish skin without looking like you had a foundation on? This is the one.. PLUS it feels so light to the skin! Try it for yourself!


• DANDELION brightening face powder by BENEFIT - This is simply the best in giving your face that healthy glow! By using a big fluffy brush, dust it allover your face right after putting on the Some Kinda Gorgeous Foundation Faker..The result is simply...refreshing! oh..its smells great too!!
  
• NARS LAguna OR GEORGIA Face powder by BENEFIT - Choose among these gorgeous product and use as blush...everybody knows about the famous NARS laguna ! if you haven't ..well its about time
  
• MS. POPULARITY by BENEFIT- I ALWAYS use this to my brides..if you want that instant glow without looking like a disco ball this is definitely the one! This is so far one of my best beauty find! I simply can't leave home without this..Dot a small amount in the cheeks, forehead, chin and blend with your fingers. You can also try dotting a small amount in the corner of the eyes and blend to give it an instant pop! Its easy as 1 2 3! This prod definitely stood by its name! LUV IT!

  Lip glass - my MAC lip glass works really well when I apply it over BENETINT


• EYES - What I normally use is MAC charcoal eyeshadow , just wash entire lid with the color instead of trying to contour lids..again just blend blend blend. I usually skip the eyeliner but ofcourse its up to you. Just stick to the brown liner for a softer look.
  
• MASCARA - Clear mascara will do..or just a thin coat of mascara is enough to give your eyes some umph!Don't forget to curl your lashes!
